The Ultimate Steak and Eggs Breakfast

June 16, 2014 by Maureen 82 Comments

ultimate steak and eggs breakfastThanks for all the notes asking if I was over the cruel flu.  I am down to those last few days of coughing my socks through my nose but otherwise I’m back to normal.  John has been looking after me and he’s done a good job but if I have to look at one more burger or eat one more fast food french fry I’m going to explode.

I got up this morning and said I felt good enough to make the ultimate Australian brekky for John as a thank-you for whacking my back, changing the bed linen every day, doing the cleaning up and laundry and all that fast food or soup from a can.   I expected him to say he wanted a big Aussie breakfast of bacon, eggs, grilled tomatoes, hash browns, baked mushrooms and toast but no, that wasn’t it.

“I was thinking about that new Ziggy bbq that Chris and Fran just bought and how about steak and eggs for the ultimate?” he said.

Now I’ve been out of commission for two weeks and I had no idea what a ‘ziggy’ was.  Chris and Fran live just next door and they have all the latest gadgets – including the ziggy.   I looked over the balcony and couldn’t see it so I looked it up online.  It’s the cutest bbq with interchangeable accessories allowing you to cook a stir-fry in the wok, a pizza on a pizza stone, roast meats or poultry, baked goodies and the traditional bbq fare.

I have bbq envy.  I’d never heard of Ziegler and Brown, the makers of the Ziggy and its accessories but if Fran likes it, then it’s bound to catch on quickly with foodies everywhere.

ultimate steak and eggs breakfast I went to the butcher to get the steak and just across the street is BBQs Galore in Kawana and they sell the Ziggy so I just had to stop in.  Well.  I had a long talk with the manager of the store and he said they had a ‘store ziggy’ that they used to cook lunch or breakfast every day.  Yesterday they baked scones in it and today they were doing meatballs.  This is the store Ziggy.

The Store Ziggy
I got back home and looked at John and said, “If I make a REALLY good breakfast on our bbq grill, will you buy me one of those nifty Ziggys?”  He grinned and said nothing.  I don’t have a birthday coming up and our anniversary is well and truly passed so I need to come up with something to celebrate.  The one I liked cost around $799 so it’s a bit of an investment but it’s the perfect size for the two of us.

What’s your ultimate breakfast?  I think mine would be blueberry pie or maybe waffles or pancakes or a homemade bacon egg and cheese biscuit or maybe my ultimate breakfast is just what’s put in front of me.  I don’t think I would have chosen steak and eggs but honestly, this was a perfect brunch.

The Ziggy BBQ
I marinated the steak for a couple of hours because I wanted to tweak a recipe I’d found online so that meant brunch instead of breakfast.  We had eggs, sauteed mushrooms and roasted tomatoes with garlic.  The man was happy.  It felt SO good to play in the kitchen again!

So glad to see you well again! I’ve missed you. I’ve not heard about the Ziggy, but then I’m really not all that much up about recent things (I’m currently fascinated by cocktails from the 1850s, for goodness sake, so that’s where my head is at the moment). Anyway, this would be dinner for us. Although in theory I totally love the idea of a big breakfast, when I get up in the morning it’s just too much food. Looking forward to your many Ziggy productions. ;-0

We have no plans to eat again today but half my steak is in the fridge for John for later and I’ll admit that the dog got half of the steak I ate and most of the egg. I’m just getting back into this eating thing. 🙂

Wonderful to see you are back to your normal self, clearly indicated by the “coughing my socks through my nose” – you are simply too funny, and I almost snorted my morning coffee through my nose when I read that

interesting this ziggy – one of the problems we have with the grill is that our dogs have this intense desire to mark it – we intend to make changes in the backyard to prevent that from happening, but when I saw that gorgeous ziggy, my first thought was ‘poor thing, it doesn’t deserve to be humiliated by three dogs” – plus, I doubt they sell it in the US, right?

I just noticed that a comment I left on the bugs on food post never showed up (sigh). Have I been super bad?

many hugs going your way, stay well!

I don’t have anything pending. I’ll double check with the tech guru to make sure I don’t have something dodgy going on. I doubt the Ziggy is sold in the US yet but it’s bound to. It’s very cool.

And hey – so intrigued by the Ziggy! You can even bake scones in it?!?! Huh! Gonna have to see if we can get Ziggys here in the states! (Hope you get that $700 model …. 😀 )

Over the moon to hear that you are better – what a sweet husband you have, he took good care of you – but I think you are sweeter to make him this breakfast! I am with you, my idea of a good breakfast would be scones or pancakes or muffins – something sweet, definitely not steak and eggs! I couldn’t help chuckling at you peeking over to check out your neighbor’s ziggy! And if only the store rented out “time slots” so you could use their ziggy till you got yours – btw, he could just be celebrating YOU! 😉

I’m glad you’re on the home stretch to recovery. It sounds like you had the black plague version of the flu in terms of symptoms. The ziggy is quite the gadget. I thought mostly men went gaga over bbq’s as any combination of meat and fire brings out their caveman ancestry. 🙂

The steak marinade seems very elaborate. I’m back to salt and pepper and then letting the sit for at least half an hour at room temperature before throwing it on the grill.

Archie had it as a baby and from there is developed into pneumonia. I was dead on my feet while looking after him – neither of us got any sleep day after day after day. Horrid. I have never heard of a Ziggy but it sure does look impressive. I love the breakfast/brunch you cooked. What a terrific way to kick-start the day and the newly repaired you xx

He’s almost got more gadgets for cooking outside than I have in the kitchen. 🙂 Well I hope you get yours and have fun with it. As far as steak and eggs for breakfast, yours looks awesome, but I would have to wait to later in the day to eat it. A heavy breakfast puts me back to sleep. UGH the amount of drool rolling down my face right now rivals that of a wolf hovering over his/her prey!!

So glad you are feeling better and that is some gadget – wow! My husband loves steak and eggs, so I’ll be hanging on to this recipe for a weekend sometime soon – thanks!

So glad you posted a steak marinade, I am not cooking meat too often and this is a good help for my next steak. I” let you know what my family think about this 🙂

That certainly looks like a mighty fine brekky – I especially like the hash browns. I’m a sucker for fried potatoes any way I can get them. I’ll be keen to see what you come up with when you get the fancy-pants barbie!

Maureen, so glad you’re almost over what’s been ailing you! This breakfast and your steak marinade surely helped… not to mention the prospect of a Ziggy grill. (Hint, hint, John…) Steak & eggs is a once in awhile ‘treat’ breakfast for TMOFW ‘n me now (we lived for it during the trucking days) and grilled tomatoes are the perfect side! Wishing you good health and more ultimate breakfasts!
