Bread Fail -ish

May 9, 2011 by Maureen 8 Comments

Thankfully there aren’t a LOT of days that I completely screw up in the kitchen, but this morning was one of them.  I find when I try to work and cook at the same time both suffer.

Don’t you feel like leaning when you look at this loaf of bread?

leaning loaf of breadWhen I was doing the last bit before plopping the dough in the pan I got called away and when I came back, my mind told me it was shaped and ready to go and I put it in the pan to rise and then into the oven.  Didn’t I look at it before I baked it?  Obviously not!  Husband took it out when the buzzer went off. I’d have left it in a little bit longer.

So, if you were planning on coming by for a sandwich, today isn’t the day to do it.  The bread was heavy, lopsided and undercooked.  Other than that, all things went well.

I hope all mothers are recovering nicely from overindulging on all the cakes, pies, chocolates and banquet sized meals they ate on Mother’s Day!

I actually enjoy mistakes and think we learn so much more from them then when everything we make is perfect. Slice that loaf, grill it and serve! I would!

I made bread for the first time the other day. It all looked good: dried sour cherries, cocoa, cinnamon, spelt flour. It came out heavy, crumbly and smelling a little like stale oil. Blergh. Has put me off baking bread for another week…

I hope you have recovered from your bread fail. I have and my last loaf was beautiful. I didn’t wander away, I made sure I concentrated on the job at hand. 🙂

I enjoy making bread, but when it doesn’t come out right, it is so disappointing. I use a breadmaker now for the mixing and first rise, but there is still a substantial time investment. Its not as if you can quickly make some more.

Yeah, I hear you on that. Once you’ve spent 3 hours you can’t just say, “oh I’ll whip up another one”. You grumble and throw things. 🙂

My cooking definitely fails when I’m not concentrating! Always something to learn from though. Hope you next bread turns perfectly.
