Chris Klaas Food Photography Workshop

November 21, 2012 by Maureen 39 Comments

On Saturday I’m going to attend my first hands-on food photography workshop.  A while back I went to the Maleny Real Food Festival and sat in on Chris Klaas’s food photography presentation.  It was so much fun to watch him prepare a dish, plate it, style it and photograph it.

I wanted to know more so before I left the festival I introduced myself and said I’d love to keep in contact and would jump at the chance to attend a workshop with him.Klaas Creative - food photography workshops by Chris Klaas

Over the weeks since then we’ve become good friends.  His first workshop is this coming Saturday and there are already 11 signed up – nearly a full group.  My friend Ranee of Rani’s Cuisine will be there as well as Lizzie Moult from Strayed from the Table.  I’m looking forward to catching up with them and meeting the other food loving photographers.

The workshop will consist of learning about our cameras, presentation, basic food styling, lighting and post production.  It’s a massive amount to cover in four hours but I’m up to the task!  I will continue to take a better photo today than I did yesterday and hopefully if the gods smile down upon me, you’ll look forward to visiting me more and more.

Who’s Chris Klaas?  He’s a photographer based on the Sunshine Coast where I live and he’s been photographing professionally since 1994.  He’s also a professionally trained chef so he’s got all the bases covered.  In his early career he worked in Sydney with some of the best advertising and fashion photographers in Sydney.  He enjoys teaching and I hope I learn a lot on Saturday.

His photos tell a story and that’s what I want to learn most.  If you’re on the Sunshine Coast or nearby and want to come with me, contact Chris through his website or on Facebook.  There will be a fancy catered lunch and before we get to eat it we’re going to style and photograph it.  Let’s hope it’s cold because I might take a long time.  Chris is bringing ALL his food props for us to choose from.

Hi Maureen, I’m a long time reader and a big fan and just wanted to say a big thank you to you not only for easyrecipe, but also for inspiring me to stop procrastinating and to just start blogging. Lack of confidence in my photography skills has has stopped me posting some of my recipes so I’m super excited for you that you are doing a course. And a little jealous. If there was something like that on offer in my neck of the woods I’d be signed up quick smart. Looking forward to reading all about it.

Thanks Maureen & Jamie. Sorry I disappeared as we ended up travelling and moving countries. We are now in Shanghai and I’ve decided once we are unpacked I’m just going to dive in and worry about styling as I go along or I will just procrastinate for ever!

If I waited until I knew how to style I’d still be working on my first post. 🙂

Hi Nancy – I don’t want to usurp poor Maureen’s blog but if Europe is easier for you, please check out From Plate to Page workshops http://www.platetopage.com/ We run an intensive, practical, hands-on workshop for food bloggers covering writing, styling and photography and our prices are reasonable. Check out the work of our two food styling/photography instructors! Our next workshop is in Ireland in May. Hope this helps…

Thanks Maureen for letting me plug P2P!! Would love to see YOU there one day 🙂

Sounds like fun! I took a couple of online classes a year or so ago from the Perfect Picture School of Photography people (the courses weren’t bad, although a tad expensive). Your pictures are pretty good, although it’s always good to have someone with more knowledge and skill giving you feedback. Will be interested to learn about your experience.

I am very envious of you, lucky lady! I would love to attend a class just on the styling alone. I find it is the area I love the most and enjoy playing with and it would be inspiring to learn from someone with so much experience. His photos in your post are gorgeous.
