When I posted about my gelato cassata I received many lovely comments and a few said, “I wish I had an ice cream machine,” and a few even wrote to me personally to say the same thing. Well, to my Australian friends, I’ve got a Cuisinart ICE-21A to give away so then I won’t be the only one making nifty things with Queen Make at Home Gelato Mix. One lucky person will be able to make their own gelato creation to win a trip to Italy.
There’s plenty of time as the Queen contest doesn’t end til the end of November. I’m going to mail the Cuisinart ICE-21A next week so you have til the 30th to enter and I’ll mail it on the 31st.
What wacky ideas do you have cooking up in your head? It’s so easy to make the gelato and then toss in your fave bits. In just under an hour I made this Oreo Cookie Gelato – from start to finish. If I had been REALLY hungry for gelato and decided to get dressed, drive to the shop, buy gelato or ice cream, drive home, unpack the groceries, get a dish, spoon it out and then sit down and eat it – I’ve spent an hour. Making it at home means I get exactly what I want.
Yes, that’s my back yard and now you know why I have no veggie garden. It’s all decking right up to the water’s edge except for an 8′ patch known fondly as “Charlie’s Loo”. Everything is a trade-off and I love this spot.
Now about this Oreo Cookie Gelato. There comes a day in every woman’s life where she needs a packet of Oreos and a gallon of milk just to make it through the day. I had one of those days earlier this week and I could have eaten through this entire batch of gelato in about 10 minutes. Thankfully I waited until I was in a better mood to make it or I’d be waddling through this post.
Queen Make at Home gelato mix is sold exclusively at Woolworth’s stores in Australia and I made a box of vanilla gelato according to the directions. I had squooshed (is that a real word?) a sleeve of Oreo cookies with my fingers so they were all broken up but big enough pieces so you knew you were eating a bit of cookie and then set the bowl in the freezer while the gelato was doing its thing in the machine. Once the gelato was done I poured it over the cookie pieces and mixed to combine.
Once the cookie bits were all incorporated into the gelato I put it into a container and pressed baking paper against the gelato. I find it keeps it fresher but that might be a figment of my imagination. I’m willing to be wrong.
If you’re in Australia (ice cream machine is 240v power and I am paying the postage) and would like to be in to win this machine, please LIKE me on Facebook and leave a comment below telling me what you’d make first.

What a great prize Maureen and your Oreo ice cream looks so delicious. Love the presentation. How wonderful that you live on the water – I love a water view. I think I would make licorice gelato xx
Oh wow what an awesome flavour for this stunning gelato 😀
I died a little at being unable to eat this through my screen!
And giveaway amazing my friend 😀 I would enter but I am lucky rough to have a cuisinart!
Awesome post!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
Yum yum! I’ve added oreos before and it was so good!
Maureen the oreo gelato looks really good. You really don’t have much of a backyard, if you need to get your fix, feel free to come and visit. The water view though is really peaceful.
one of these days when you have more time, I’d love to come and play in your garden!
Maureen, I love this gelato but I’m really coveting your back yard! Wow, how fun to have your home right on the water! What a great place to eat a BIG bowl of your wonderful gelato! What time should I be there? 🙂
It’s 6pm Saturday night now. Can you get here by 8?
How lovely to live on the water. That is our dream for retirement. Would love to see a pic of your view! The oreo gelato sounds yummy! I’ve heard that the Cuisinart machines are brilliant.
Hey Maureen,
Thanks for the giveaway!
I’d make sweet corn ice cream first, because it is definitely an interesting flavour, allowing me to combine my love for Vietnamese sweet corn and Western ice cream 🙂
And I knew about this giveaway because I followed and liked you on Facebook since ages ago 🙂
I’ve never tasted sweet corn ice cream before. How interesting!
So tasty! I already have a cuisinart actually and love it! That oreo flavor looks divine.
I have a Nemox that I use most of the time and a Cuisinart one where I have to freeze the bowl. I LOVE making ice cream! No, that’s not true. I love eating ice cream. LOL
How fabulous to be so close to the water. I love the tranquility of the water and those beautiful reflections from the surface. Your ice cream looks delicious and I have to admit I love using my ice cream maker. My favourite is Dolce De Leche flavour. GG
I love my Cuisinart ice cream maker! This is a great giveaway!
Would love to eat Bing Cherry with Amaretto gelato while sitting on your lovely waterfront patio having a spirited discussion with you and the hubs!
I love that ice cream maker, Maureen, I got one for Christmas quite a few years ago and although it’s not often used in my house (it’s too dangerous for me), when I do use it I LOVE it, so simple and easy to clean up (that’s the key).
I wish this gelato mix was available in Canada as I would love to try it. It would be great to have on hand in the pantry for those unexpected visitors. And I love that they are natural without those scary chemical names that one can’t even pronounced let alone understand.
Heres a great tip: I always keep the metal insert in my freezer (ALWAYS) and that way you never have to plan to make ice cream, just pop it out and it’s ready. In fact, my hubby uses it if we forgot to get white wine the night before with enough time to chill it; he pours the entire bottle of wine into the ice cold bowl and lets it sit for about 10 minute (he puts the empty bottle in the freezer to chill), then he carefully pours back the chilled wine into the chilled bottle and we’re good to go! We’ve been ‘saved’ from putting ice cubes in the wine many times with this technique!
I have a very similar ice cream maker … I just realized I haven’t been using it enough! Good luck with your giveaway. 🙂
I would love to get my hands on that gelato mix, and it is high time for me to use my ice cream maker. Lovely photos!
I love oreo ice cream and you made them beautifully and yummy. I want to try your recipe soon. Thanks for sharing Maureen 🙂
Have a wonderful weekend.
What a great give away, someone will be happy with that 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Oreo gelato looks amazing … Wish I could have some, right now 🙂
Which I was an Aussie right now!!! 🙂 Great giveaway! However, I love that oreo gelato more than the ice cream maker! I want some! Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Le sigh. I just spent half an hour on a skype call to Ballarat with my best mate, James. Now you’re slinging ice cream machines all over Australia and taunting me with oreo gelato.
I NEED TO VACATE TO DOWN UNDER!
What a fantastic prize and just in time for the spring warmth too! 😀
I can eat ice cream all year round, Lorraine. 🙂
Maureen,
I wish I was from Australia, so I could win the trip to Italy. your Oreo gelato looks so inviting!
I know, Becky, I know! I’d LOVE to go to Italy 🙂 I have been a few times and there’s always something new to see.
Yeah, I’d pretty much die if I won an ice cream maker! Love your site, GF!! 🙂 🙂
Rachael, nobody’s dying on my watch! 🙂
That’s a dreamy gelato and a great giveaway. If only I reside in Australia 😉
Fabulous prize and boo hoo too bad I am not in Australia! I’ve dreamed of owning a great ice cream machine for ages and the one time I actually had a gift certificate at our favorite local cooking supply shop and told my husband I was going to use it to get the ice cream maker….we ended up with a fish poacher! I would make ice cream all the time if I had one. And I dream of making a vanilla ice cream laced with salted butter caramel sauce and with maybe flakes of chocolate in it as well. And a coffee ice cream laced with a chocolate sauce. Delicious!
*not an entry as I already have a bright orange one*
I had no idea about that Make at Home Gelato stuff! Might have to get my hands on some when the weather warms up!!
You’re such a generous gal.. I’m in Canada, so no worries about shipping here, perhaps someone local should win this one:D Beautiful blog post with a favorite ice cream of mine today! We used to have Woolworth’s stores here in Calgary, but they’ve shut down some time ago. It used to be one of my favorite shops!
When I was growing up in Maine, Woolworth’s was a five and dime store. 🙂
Great back yard! I’d trade that for a veggie garden in a heartbeat. And Oreos are one of those cookies that even people who don’t “like” packaged cookies crave. Nice combo of flavors here – thanks.
Awesome recipe – and great giveaway 🙂
I so wish we could get that product here in the US. Gelato is my absolute favorite over ice cream any day! And as for flavors, that would be endless for me! Seasonally right now would be a fresh peach gelato. I love how intense and real gelatos taste! Beautiful backyard view 🙂
What a nice cool version of gelato! I love oreo cookies any way and yours looks absoloutely delicious too;)
I am obviously not entering the giveaway but dropping by to say whoever wins this ice cream maker is a lucky guy/gal. I love mine and I haven’t bought commercially made ice cream in years.
Id Love to win this – I was just saying to my partner the other day my next investment will HAVE to be an ice cream maker!
I think my first creation would be a pineapple and basil gelato…mmmmm
What a fantastic gelato and giveaway. I love my Cuisinart ice cream maker.
That Oreo Cookie Gelato looks divine…and yes, I would most certainly agree that squooshed is definitely a real word.
We have a loquat tree in our back yard and I think that some of them chopped up and stirred through the Vanilla Bean Gelato would fantastic. Or even some of the fruit from our cherry tree. Or fig tree. Or maybe even a combination of all three. The possibilities are endless.
I have only just found your website and it already looks like the quality time that I spend with my husband is going to be cut short. Can’t wait to get stuck into reading it.
cheers, Heather
Hi Heather, I’m so pleased you stopped by and it’s lovely to meet you! I’m trying to imagine loquat and vanilla bean or even cherry. I have tried fig and it’s delicious!
Dear Maureen,
This looks like an awesome prize. My sister has an ice cream machine and it amazing how creative you can be in terms of coming up with the most unexpected flavours of ice cream and gelato.
I’m not in for the giveaway because I bought one recently but I LOVE the idea of Oreo cookie gelato!! 🙂
Nice machine, Maureen. I can’t enter as I live half a world away but will investigate it anyway as have broken my old €1 machine.
This looks amazing!!!
I want I want I want……..your ice cream AND the ice cream maker. I wish I lived in Australia, for more reasons than one. It’s so lovely to live by the water.
I love the word squooshed…..real word or not. Describes the disaster that cookie boxes can be when opened too quick perfectly…….
The oreo gelato looks absolutely mouthwatering! I would gladly eat a scoop or two or maybe three!
Thanks Katerina and when I saw the link to your stuffed zucchini blossoms I can’t get over there fast enough to check it out!
Loving this gelato right now and so wishing I had some to munch on. Fabulous giveaway too, if only I lived in Australia!!
Sorry Beth, if you were closer I’d bring some over.
My ice cream maker! You are SO generous! Thanks to you we’ll have one more person who will enjoy ice cream making with us!
Snap! I promised the little girl and her friend from down the road that we’d make cookies and cream ice cream. Now after seeing this post I think I may go with Queen’s quick gelato idea! PS I also put baking paper + cling wrap around. It helps stop freezer odour transfer. You’re right!
